Sunday we opted to “fly by the seat of our pants”.. in a way. We started the day with an unanticipatedly (yes.. new word) long walk to Ottolenghi - Notting Hill. This isn’t a full-up restaurant, but a small bakery that has seating for 10 in the back. They open at 9:30AM on Sunday.. but unfortunately for us, we thought they opened at 9AM, so we had 30 minutes to kill before actually getting any breakfast. Also unfortunately for us, none of the nearby shops opened before 12PM on a Sunday.. so we just strolled around..

Since we had some time on our hands, we decided to figure out these Barclay Cyclehire bikes that are dotted all over London. Basically, you pay £2 to use the service for 24 hours. Everytime you want to rent a bike, you get the first 30 minutes for free, and then you get charged for increments of time over that. This is actually pretty cool.. because as long as you plan your stops to be 30 minutes apart, you can get around all of London for just £2! And you’ll see a lot more than hopping around on the Underground (fast, not scenic) or on foot (scenic but very slow). It’s also less expensive than the Underground (each trip within Zone 1 is £2.10). Throughout the rest of the day, we were able to find cyclehire stations pretty much every block, except around Buckingham Palace, so it was definitely a good idea.

Back to breakfast.. we got back to Ottolenghi right when it opened. We got a latte, a croissant, a small brioche, and a slice of ham & leek quiche. I would definitely recommend dropping in if you’re in the area.. we couldn’t try it all, but everything looked really good, and what we did get to taste was top notch. Bonus, the latte was also very well made.. super smooth, not too hot, nice latte art..

After breakfast, we grabbed some bikes and headed to Kensington Garden. We had a nice stroll through the park, and checked out the outside of Kensington Palace. Something that Minh and I have noticed while being here in the UK.. the dogs are so well behaved! I don’t know what it is, but English dogs have no issues playing off-leash, coming back to their owners, and not harassing other dogs. It’s AMAZING!

Image00107 Image00108 Image00109 Image00110 Image00111 Image00112 Image00113 Image00114 Image00115 Image00116 Image00117 Image00118

Once we got to the other side of Kensington Garden, we hopped back on two wheels and headed over to the Natural History Museum. The line at the front entrance of the NHM was INSANE!!! Sure.. holiday weekend and free and all that, but it was ridiculous. Luckily, a nice museum worker told us that the side entrance was much faster. He wasn’t kidding.. the queue at the side entrance only took 5 minutes to get into the museum. But the museum was packed!

Image00119 Image00120 Image00121 Image00122 Image00123 Image00124 Image00125 Image00126 Image00127 Image00128 Image00129 Image00130 Image00131 Image00132 Image00135 Image00136 Image00137 Image00138 Image00139

We found out about half way through the museum that the hour-long queue at the front entrance was also the only way to see the dinosaur exhibit.. so we had to skip that. Oh wells.. instead we worked our way through nearly all the other exhibits, including the Cocoon.. which would be really cool and interesting if you were into biology and natural history and collections and things like that.. which Minh and I aren’t really.. so noted for future museum exhibits.

By the time we got out of the NHM, we were pretty hungry.. so we strolled down the street to see what we could find for lunch. Actually.. we were headed to Fernandez & Wells, but I wasn’t really interested in having lunch there once we got there, so we ended up having lunch at Le Pain Quotidien instead. I had a nice cheese board with some carrot/apple/mango juice and Minh had an open-faced sandwich. I could probably eat a cheese board at every meal… if good cheese wasn’t so expensive. ;-)

Image00140 Image00141 Image00142 Image00143

After lunch, we had to plan our ride to the Rapha store. To get there, we would need to pass by Buckingham Palace, around which there are NO cyclehire stations. So we would either need to book it, or find a cyclehire station in between so that we wouldn’t go over the 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I think we missed the time by about five minutes (not realizing it until we had already docked out bikes)… But we did have a nice ride through Green Park, around the Victoria Memorial, and through St. James Park.

The Rapha Cycle Club is a different kind of bike shop.. in that.. it doesn’t sell bicycles. I guess that’s fine? The shop is actually really nice.. clean and well laid out. There’s a little cafe attached, and they were showing Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia, which was a nice bonus. We looked around the store a bit.. then ordered a latte (yes, another one) and pulled up a couple chairs to watch the rest of the team time trials. If you can believe it, the latte at Rapha was actually (slightly) better than the one from Ottolenghi.. not but a lot, but just by a little.

We spent a few hours walking around Soho, back and forth a few times, here and there through crowds of tourists, in and out of shops, past some shady looking Thai massage parlors next to gentlemen’s clubs and pornography stores… it was something different. We also walked over to Golden Square for some Nordic cuisine. I don’t think I knew what that would entail until we got to Nordic Bakery… and what it DOES entail is open faced sandwiches with some sort of smoked or cured fish.. and other baked goods. We got a smoked salmon sandwich and a rustic oatmeal cookie (which was wafer thin, but surprisingly delicious).

Image00144 Image00145 Image00146 Image00151

By this time, it was probably about 6PM. Stores were closing down (oh Sunday!), so we decided to head back to the hotel. We had a (very) late dinner reservations that we wanted to rest up for. Since our dinner reservations wasn’t until 10:30PM.. we picked up a takeaway order of pad thai from the Thai Terrace and brought it back to the hotel. Then we just rested up for our big dinner at… DINNER BY HESTON BLUMENTHAL!

The only reservation we could get was for 10:30PM on a Sunday night.. and the restaurant was still packed when we got there. We actually had to wait for 15 minutes for our table to be ready (the restaurant was also impossible to find because it’s inside a hotel and we passed it without even realizing). In any case.. the concept behind the menu is actually really cool. All of the dishes are based on historic “traditional” English cuisine.. but re-imagined with a modern twist. Here’s what we ordered..

Image00153 Image00154 Image00155 Image00156 Image00157 Image00158 Image00159 Image00160

Minh and I have now survived our first full week in the UK… and here is everything we accomplished..

  • set-up UK bank account
  • signed up for internet (but won’t get installed for two more weeks)
  • switched over half of the utilities
  • groceries and random household goods shopping
  • unpacked!
  • MINH GOT A PHONE!
  • got a little more comfortable with driving

After a full week of work for me and exploring (and unpacking and frustration) for Minh, we wound down Friday night with a nice homecooked meal (by me!.. Minh was cooking dinners during the week). We roasted a (spatchcocked) chicken with some veggies and a side of sauteed green beans. Washed it down with a Moscow Mule.. and finished it off with melon and greek yogurt for dessert.

And then comes Saturday.. and THE SUN!! Didn’t even need a jacket in the morning.

We headed off to Ikea to get some home stuff that we forgot to pack and/or didn’t have at the flat… trashcan for the kitchen, rug for the entry hall so we don’t destroy the carpet, big wood cutting board, some kitchen utensils and plastic food containers, etc. etc.. I must say that Ikea in the UK is the same enough.. but still very different…

We also did another Costco run, and attempted to get UK Costco American Express cards.. but that failed. We’ll need to call in to see if they can give us UK Costco AMEX without us having to pay a new membership charge and still get to keep our US cards. We’ll see.

In the afternoon, we rode into town for some (more) groceries.. and it was raining… (so much for the sunshine in the morning!).  I’ve discovered a new AMAZING drink called Frijj (sounds like “fridge”). I haven’t tried any of the originals, but I’m IN LOVE with the Honeycomb Chocolate Swirl Milkshake from the Incredible Range… INCREDIBLE IS RIGHT!

Places: Georgetown Cupcake

I don’t watch THAT much TV.. and we recently got rid of our cable at home.. so I had NO IDEA what the big deal was about Georgetown Cupcake. All I knew what that there was a show and a lot of hype.

Film crew prepping in the shade.

Watching them film this scene showed me how contrived "reality" TV is.. she walked across the street TWICE!

Cupcakes seem to be popping up ALL OVER the place, even though they’re nothing new. I remember back in gradeschool, when my mom would bake cupcakes for me to share with my classmates on my birthday. Having gone to a small private school, birthdays were special because the birthday girl/boy was allowed “free dress” and all the kids ALWAYS got a cupcake. It would appear, though, that the simple birthday cupcake has evolved to be so much more these days.

Anyway.. We had some spare tickets from the Taste of Georgetown that was going on. Georgetown Cupcake had a booth there, but they were also redeeming tickets at their store (just a couple blocks away) for ANY TWO flavors of cupcakes. We had three extra tickets, plus a free one someone gave to us because they didn’t want to stand in line. That means EIGHT cupcakes!!! Just for ME (because Anni has Celiac’s and Minh doesn’t really care for sweets).

Line stretched WAY DOWN the block..

Can you spot Anni? The line was long, but the wait was worth it.

The bakery itself is pretty small. I had never seen so many cupcakes on display and on racks. It was pretty cool.

Cupcakes GALORE!

Cupcakes waiting to be served

I had low expectations for the cupcakes because I didn’t want to be disappointed if they didn’t live up to the hype. But.. I was very surprised at how DELICIOUS they were. The cake was moist and the frosting wasn’t overly sweet. Some flavor combinations where better than others, but all of them were good. What was really amazing about them was how they held up after traveling around DC (waiting for the DC Circulator in Georgetown, catching the Metro at Dupont Circle) and staying in the room overnight (near the A/C unit) and during the day (while we got ready for the wedding). I ate them more than 24 hours later without any refrigeration, and they still tasted amazing and had this perfect texture (cake and frosting both).

Here’s the rundown of the flavors I tried:

Clockwise from top left: Red Velvet, Pumpkin Spice, PB Fudge, Chocolate³, Salted Caramel, Mint Cookies and Cream, Key Lime, Maple

Peanut Butter Fudge: Valrhona chocolate cupcake with a fudge core topped witha peanut butter frosting and fudge star drizzle
The cake was delicious, and it had this AMAZING fudge core that just oozed chocolatey goodness. The frosting left much to be desired.. it generall tasted liked whipped up Creamy Jiffy.. so I was not impressed with that.

Key Lime: Fresh key lime cupcake with key lime frosting topped with a candied keylime
Tasted like the best key lime pie I have ever had, but in the perfect cupcake size.

Salted Caramel: Caramel cupcake with a salted caramel-infused buttercream frosting topped with a caramel drizzle
I’m a huge fan of salted caramel ANYTHING. This cupcake was no exception. What would have made this cupcake even more perfect is if there was a salted caramel core.

Pumpkin Spice: Pumpkin spice cupcake with a maple-infused cream cheese frosting topped with a fondant maple leaf
The cake was like a PERFECT spice cake with just a hint

Maple: Maple cupcake with a maple-infused cream cheese frosting topped with a fondant maple leaf
The maple cupcake wasn’t anything special (in terms of flavor). But it was good. If I just wanted a simple cupcake without anything too rich or fancy, this would be it.

Chocolate ³: Valrhona chocolate cupcake with a rich Callebaut chocolate ganache icing topped with french chocolate sprinkles
I think this one was my favorite. Like most girls, I LOVE LOVE LOVE chocolate.. and this cupcake did not disappoint. It was that perfect balance of rich chocolate flavor and light sweetness. The texture of the cake was moist and the ganache icing was the perfect way to top this.

Red Velvet: Classic red velvet cupcake with a vanilla cream cheese frosting topped witha red fondant heart
I’m not usually a fan of red velvet, but this one was really good. In fact.. Minh actually finished off the cake part (he didn’t care too much for the frosting) after I took my bite.

Mint Cookies and Cream: Madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcake baked with oreo crumbles topped with a mint oreo crumble-infused buttercream frosting
I didn’t get to try this one, but it looked (and sounds) delicious. Will need to try it whenever I head back to DC.

Generally speaking, I was very impressed with Georgetown Cupcake. It was well worth the long line (only 40 minutes) we waited in outside. And for those of you not willing to wait in line, there’s another location in Bethesda, MD.

Magical Places: Wonderland Bakery

Minh and I stopped by Wonderland Bakery on our way home from the Laguna Art Museum to grab a “snack” for our lazy Saturday afternoon. I’d never heard of Wonderland Bakery before, but apparently, it’s been all over the news with celebrities endorsing their gingerbread and customized cookies (like the one for President Obama’s Inauguration).

Wonderland Bakery - Newport Beach, CA

I was AMAZED by this place. It looks like walking into a fairytale (everything sparkles in pastels and glitter) and smells like a baker’s dream (fresh baked cakes and sweet frosting). The whole place feel MAGICAL!!! I didn’t know where to look first… tea party sets for girls over here, Halloween decor over there, party supplies and decorations on this side, aprons, cake stands, pastel castles, glitter, color….. my head was SPINNING.

Wonderland Castle.. in all it glittery pastel GLORY..

Party gifts and decor and ideas GALORE!

Fun party hats for all occasions!

I wanted to buy EVERYTHING, but had no immediate need or use for any of it. Minh let me pick the cupcake, and we ended up getting Chocolate Cookie Dough cupcake with Chocolate Frosting (they let you pick the cake and frosting). We also got a chocolate chip-toffee cookie and a gingerbread man.

Cookie Dough Cake with Chocolate Frosting

The cupcake was really good. The frosting was light and soft. It was a little on the sweeter side, but not overly so that it overwhelmed my tastebuds. The cake was super moist and light (not dense and crumbly), and not too sweet. I think the cupcake itself was the perfect balance of sweetness and lightness for a dessert. Perhaps a little sweeter than my tastebuds like, but I can see it being just right for those with a sweet tooth.

Gingerbread man.. awaiting his demise..

The gingerbread man was DELICIOUS. The cookie had this great molasses color and pillow softness. The flavor was deep (I can’t really think of another word to describe it), with a hint of ginger and the perfect balance of sweetness.

Cupcake on the left.. Chocolate chip and toffee cookie on the right..

The cookie was saved for last. I wasn’t completely sold on it because the color was slightly off.. lighter than I think a chocolate chip cookie should be. I brought the cookie to work, since we didn’t have a chance over the weekend to eat it. Overall, it was very good. The flavor was SPOT ON for a chocolate chip and toffee cookie. The texture was a little crumbly, but perhaps because I waited two days to eat it rather than eating it the day it was baked. I think if I ate it right away, or at least the day of, it would have had the perfect texture. Oh wells.. this just means I need to go back and try another cookie.

Of all the decor and glittery, magical goodness that was stuffed into this store/bakery, I think my favorite BY FAR is this adorable cake stand (didn’t snap a picture, but here’s a part of it from the website). I can’t seem to find it online, but it’s $150 retail in the store. Added to the WISHLIST.
