Nesting: The Art of Organization (January)

Posted: January 17, 2013 by ncnguyen514 in Uncategorized

I’m a bit of a slob and a hoarder and lazy.. not as bad as those people on TV,  but more than Minh would like. I kinda leave my stuff around in piles, and I am more or less content with what hoarders and messy people like to call “organized chaos”. Stacks and piles of seemingly unorganized stuff, but of course I know exactly where everything is.. right? :-/ Minh can’t stand it.. and usually he silently accepts my mess thinking that I will clean it up “tomorrow”, or he’ll move my crap (neatly) to the dining table and tell me that I “need to go through it” (which is Minh-code for “clean up your crap”).

Case in point… my jewelry. It used to sit on our dresser in piles, and stored away in boxes, because I didn’t have a good system for organizing all my jewelry (which actually isn’t that much). My original plan was to build a jewelry cabinet to hang in the bathroom, hidden behind a poster/photograph of a light painting by Pablo Picasso. I had planned it.. even drew it out and made a cut-list.. and then never got around to it. So my jewelry continued to sit on our dresser in “organized” piles.

This is organized.. right?

This is organized.. right?

Minh finally sent me a bunch of links to jewelry cabinets, and I settled on one that was pretty descent. It only took me about an hour to organize all my jewelry in the cabinet and our room is much cleaner for it, but man did it take a long time for me to finally get around to putting it away.

Room for EVERYTHING!

Room for EVERYTHING!

On the other hand.. sometimes I can be really good about organization.. for instance with our deep freezer. Minh and I like to bargain shop for groceries at our local Mexican market (meat and produce is much cheaper there, the quality is good enough for us.. and you can also find different types of off-cuts of meat that you don’t typically find in your standard markets.. like hooves and tongue and blood). We don’t do it often, but when we do we go ALL OUT and stock up on meats. Our last trip included 25 chicken drumstick for only $7! To keep the meat from going bad, I vacuum seal them in two-person servings and toss them in the freezer.

mm.. Frozen meet... and tamales..

We keep a list of everything we have in the freezer on the top lid. That way, we don’t have to go digging through the freezer to figure out what we have, and we can easily see what we have so we can plan meals (if planning meals was our thing.. which it sometimes is, but more often than not, we are winging our weeknight meals and throwing things together on the fly).

And a final note on organization in January… cleaning up Christmas. While I was taking down the ornaments from the Christmas tree, I developed a system to get all of the ornaments into one storage box.. YES! This really only works with shatterproof ornaments.. so no dice if you’ve got old-school glass ornaments:

1. Pile in all your shatterproof ornaments. 2. Carefully place your special ornaments. 3. Cover with Christmas tablecloth and outdoor shatterproof ornaments and wreath. 4. Cover with tree skirt.

Kind of a boring post.. but at least I’m keeping up with the blog! To make up for it, I leave you with a cute picture of Sprocket…

January Dressing: Week Two

Posted: January 14, 2013 by ncnguyen514 in Uncategorized

This week, I tried dressing up a little more for work.. and I had every intention of carrying that through the weekend (skirts everyday!), but then we got caught up with housework and this unseasonable cold weather (for a California winter), that all I wanted to do was throw on jeans and a big jacket.. or lay in bed all day…

First Ride Back!

Posted: July 18, 2012 by ncnguyen514 in Uncategorized

It’s been about six months since Minh and I got a good ride in. Mostly because I’m prone to crashing and we didn’t want to be all bloody and bruised for the wedding.. also because cycling gives you weird tan lines. But now with the wedding done, we’re free to get all sorts of weird tan lines!

This past Saturday, I had my first ride back! It wasn’t fast or far.. but I got a good 20 miles in about an hour and a half. Had to go solo since Minh had to work.

FIRST RIDE BACK!

Sunday, the guys wanted to get pizza in Seal Beach, so rather than give my legs a rest, I tagged along (even though I wasn’t allowed any pizza.. story for a different day). This time, we attached our new GoPro to the bike.. it lasted the majority of the ride, but died at some point after lunch while we were riding on the beach path (easy recovery after a heavy lunch for the boys).

You can see that we took many stops.. like the Seal Beach Farmers market and the pier.. and here and there waiting for people to meet up or catch up. Overall a good ride though… Next time, I’m getting pizza.

Side note: Check out our ultra-successful “helmet-lock” technique… where we interlock our helmets around our bicycles to prevent theft.

Save the Penguins!

Yes.. those penguins are wearing sweaters. It’s actually a very sad story. These penguins are affected by an oil spill which occured in New Zealand early last month. Thousands of birds have already died. In an attempt to save the penguins, a New Zealand yarn store, Skeinz, had requested these “penguin jumpers”. The jumpers serve two purposes: (1) to keep them warm until they get cleaned up and (2) to prevent them from preening their oil covered feathers. The response from the knitting community has been overwhelming, and Skeinz is still in the process of figuring out what to do with the surplus of jumpers that have come in.

Here’s where you can help. While there are tons of jumpers that have already been made, there is still much donation needed to help with the disaster clean-up effort. Skeinz is now using the surplus jumpers to outfit Flip, the Rescue Fund Penguin Mascot. 100% of the proceeds from these sales goes to the Skeins Penguin Rescue Fund, which will go back into helping clean up the penguins affected by the oil spill.

If you would still like to send a jumper to help with the effort, you can find the pattern here and you can send them directly to Skeins at PO Box 3123 Onekawa, Napier 4142, New Zealand . Or, if you’re knitting talents haven’t exactly blossomed yet, my sister, Anni of Noe Crafts, is more than happy to knit a penguin jumper on your behalf. $15 will cover the cost of materials and postage to send the penguin jumpers to Skeinz. Here’s a sample of what she’s made already.

12 weeks out..

Posted: August 13, 2010 by ncnguyen514 in Uncategorized

This weekend marks 12 weeks until the Silverman Triathlon.. my last BIG EVENT of the “season” and year (just two trail races to finish of the year after the big race). I’m definitely NOT where I would like to be in my fitness level and preparations to meet my goals for this race. I definitely need to kick my butt into gear and start focusing more on my training.

Currently, I’m suffering from super low morale for no reason other than my mind and body are just getting lazy. I love the thrill and adrenaline of the race.. but hate having to prepare for them (every ride is a training ride.. every run is a training run.. blech). But I really hate the thought of racing all the time (case in point.. the OTH series, which I love.. but am getting a bit tired of). I get this feeling that I jumped feet first into this whole racing business this year without really thinking out my strategy. Sometimes I feel like I’ve signed up for way too many races (4 races in 8 days at the beginning of August… am I getting burned out??).. other times I feel like there’s nothing going on at all (only 2 races in the ENTIRE MONTH of July). Where’s the BALANCE?!?!?!?!?

That.. and I’m starting to ponder life’s big choices. Did I really think I could spend the majority of my life sitting comfortably basking under flourescents in front of a computer for 8+ hours a day? Is this how I’m going to leave my mark on the world? I know I’m never going to be famous.. and that’s not really what I want.. but a life slightly more meaningful and impactful than what I have now.. is that too much to ask for?

Maybe I should take a life lesson from my office succulent.. Just when I thought it was dying and had no more hope for life (basking under fluorescents and getting watered maybe once a month), it surprised me with a little side sprout. Perhaps there’s still hope.

Keep on keepin' on..
