Minh and I stopped by Wonderland Bakery on our way home from the Laguna Art Museum to grab a “snack” for our lazy Saturday afternoon. I’d never heard of Wonderland Bakery before, but apparently, it’s been all over the news with celebrities endorsing their gingerbread and customized cookies (like the one for President Obama’s Inauguration).
I was AMAZED by this place. It looks like walking into a fairytale (everything sparkles in pastels and glitter) and smells like a baker’s dream (fresh baked cakes and sweet frosting). The whole place feel MAGICAL!!! I didn’t know where to look first… tea party sets for girls over here, Halloween decor over there, party supplies and decorations on this side, aprons, cake stands, pastel castles, glitter, color….. my head was SPINNING.
I wanted to buy EVERYTHING, but had no immediate need or use for any of it. Minh let me pick the cupcake, and we ended up getting Chocolate Cookie Dough cupcake with Chocolate Frosting (they let you pick the cake and frosting). We also got a chocolate chip-toffee cookie and a gingerbread man.
The cupcake was really good. The frosting was light and soft. It was a little on the sweeter side, but not overly so that it overwhelmed my tastebuds. The cake was super moist and light (not dense and crumbly), and not too sweet. I think the cupcake itself was the perfect balance of sweetness and lightness for a dessert. Perhaps a little sweeter than my tastebuds like, but I can see it being just right for those with a sweet tooth.
The gingerbread man was DELICIOUS. The cookie had this great molasses color and pillow softness. The flavor was deep (I can’t really think of another word to describe it), with a hint of ginger and the perfect balance of sweetness.
The cookie was saved for last. I wasn’t completely sold on it because the color was slightly off.. lighter than I think a chocolate chip cookie should be. I brought the cookie to work, since we didn’t have a chance over the weekend to eat it. Overall, it was very good. The flavor was SPOT ON for a chocolate chip and toffee cookie. The texture was a little crumbly, but perhaps because I waited two days to eat it rather than eating it the day it was baked. I think if I ate it right away, or at least the day of, it would have had the perfect texture. Oh wells.. this just means I need to go back and try another cookie.
Of all the decor and glittery, magical goodness that was stuffed into this store/bakery, I think my favorite BY FAR is this adorable cake stand (didn’t snap a picture, but here’s a part of it from the website). I can’t seem to find it online, but it’s $150 retail in the store. Added to the WISHLIST.
