Has anyone out there ever done a Spartan Race? I have yet to do one, but it seems to be next step in the logical progression of foot races. First you start off with your local 5K, then move up to the 10K. After getting those 5K and 10K races under your belt, you step up to the half marathon. A full marathon will soon follow. And of course you’ll want to be faster for each of those distances. But, once you get bored of the road, you’ll opt for some trail runs.. and if your out on the trails anyway, you might as well add in some obstacles, right? I’ve only done one mud run, and it was a lot of fun. I can see the appeal of pushing your body a little bit further with these down and dirty obstacles. I asked around my social network, and got some pictures of friends who have competed and completed a Spartan Race… Don’t they look like they’re having fun?
Most sporting and athletic events has some sort of “hat trick“, and for “Spartans”, it’s known as the Trifecta. Competitors can earn a trifecta medal by completing the three race distances in one calendar year – Spartan Sprint, Spartan Super, and Spartan Beast. You get a pretty nifty medal for completing the Trifecta, too.
If you really want a challenge, how about doing completing a Trifecta in ONE WEEKEND? For those of you still needing to make summer vacation plans, the Hawaii Spartan Race Trifecta Weekend (16-17 August 2014) might be right up your alley. Races are about half full right now, with Trifecta registration currently at $139. But you need to act fast, as prices go up at the start of each new month.
In return for my shameless advertising, the nice guys over at Reebok Spartan Race HQ have given me one free race entry to give away to one of you! Up for grabs is any open heat (non-confirmed start time) entry into any 2014 Spartan Race in the continental US. I haven’t done a giveaway on this blog before, so this is a pretty good first. There are three ways to enter this giveaway – just click on the link below for details:
The giveaway will close on May 30 – and I’ll announce a winner soon after. In the mean time, get 15% off your Spartan Race Entry by clicking on this link here: %15 off Spartan Race Code
Disclaimer: This giveaway was provided by Reebok Spartan Race. I was in NO WAY compensated for this post, and all opinions are my own. I just thought it would be a cool giveaway. Thank you John Le, Angie Woo, and Jose Oliveras for allowing me to use their race photos. Reebok Spartan Race images are used with permission.
This looks so intense I wasn’t going to enter, but realized there’s a 3 mile one. That’s not too bad. The obstacles look fun too especially the mud pits. Maybe if I win, it’ll push me to do something out of my comfort zone. 🙂
The Beast was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Also one of my greatest bragging rights! Perhaps I’ll do the 3 in one next year in Hawaii, but the Beast just took SO much out of me…like 4 days recovery, so I know I won’t be able to do 3 in one weekend! Tran, I think you failed to mention that the reason why it’s harder, is if you fail an obstacle, that’s 30 burpees.
Angie… I have no experience with Spartan so had no Coue about the burpees. You sign up for Hawaii trifecta weekend next year and maybe I’ll do it with you (if I can)
My favorite obstacle is the barbed wire field.
My favorite obstacle is the rope climb. It’s also the most challenging for me.
I would have to say that my favorite obstacle was the tire drag/pull… That or the tire flip… I sense a theme here! I did the Monterey Beast last year and am tackling it again this year en route to my trifecta! For anyone out there considering an obstacle race, this series has been the most challenging and the most rewarding so far! AROOO!
Good luck Brianne! Maybe someday I’ll join you and Angie in a race.
I will complete my TRIFECTA this year with the Spartan Beast in Monterey (hopefully). These events are tough. I see groups of people in the beginning mile who work and play together who signed up like an office party event, thinking its just a fun run. After the first mile you hear people yelling at each other “OMG what did you sign us up for?”
These SPARTAN RACES are true tests of training, preparation, mental aptitude, endurance, and stamina. At the finish line tears flow from the accomplishment. On different forums we are discussing shoes, clothes, gloves, techniques, hydration, etc. There is very little room in the BEAST for mistakes. The Spartan Races are pretty much in three phases: hard, Harder, Hardest.
I am not an athlete, never have been, probably never will be. I just signed up for the Sprint held in Phoenix last February and am determined to get the Trifecta medal. These events are accomplishments like nothing else I have ever done. I don’t enter to win, just finish; ironically I finish in the 50% range which means at age 54 I am beating half of the people.
This is one of the discussion places for all things Spartan Race.

My favorite is the monkey bars! Especially when you are sweaty, muddy, and tired. I love Spartan Race!
My favorite obstacle is climbing the nets!
The fire jump is my favorite obstacle. Perfect time for a good photo op too.
I have yet to participate in a Spartan but crawling in the mud seems cool… literally cool.
i have no experience, but i remember watching some spartan special on tv and the guys throwing the spear were struggling. that one looks tough.
